01/12/2009
Statewide sites increase promotion throughout the month of January
As the New Year begins, BBBSOK is celebrating National Mentoring Month. Each site has plans to not only intensify promotion for the support of mentorship, but also to thank its current volunteers. Some efforts include major fundraisers like “a Taste of Tulsa”, “Thank Your Mentor Day” in Bartlesville, a volunteer appreciation banquet in Stillwater, a special proclamation by Mayor Mick Cornett of Oklahoma City, a volunteer appreciation banquet in Shawnee, half-time recognition of Bigs and Littles during Rogers State University basketball games in Claremore, and a fun night at a Blazers hockey game in Norman.
The Tulsa office is hosting Celebrity Big for a Day on Tuesday, January 13th, from 7:30-9:30 am at the ORU Mabee Center. “A Taste of Tulsa” will be on Saturday, January 24th, from 5:30 pm-12 am at the Renaissance Hotel. There will also be a volunteer reception at Oscar’s Gastropub, located at 18th and Boston, on Tuesday, January 27th from 5:30-7:00 pm.
In Bartlesville, Thursday, January 22nd is Thank Your Mentor Day—gourmet cookies will be delivered to each volunteer’s workplace or home. They will also include thank-you cards with personalized notes attached and written by Match Support Specialists, the professionals who supervise the matches. The goal is to let volunteers know how much of a difference they make in their Little Brother or Sister’s life. There will also be a “Match Bowl” group activity for Bigs and Littles on Thursday, January 29th at Red Apple Sports Center.
The Stillwater office will host a volunteer appreciation banquet on Thursday, January 22nd at Country Side Church.
In Oklahoma City, BBBSOK-OKC Executive Director, Kelly McGuire, will be at the Oklahoma City Council meeting on January 22nd to receive a proclamation for National Mentoring Month by Mayor Mick Cornett.
The Shawnee office will be hosting a volunteer appreciation dinner on January 22nd, 6:30 pm, at the First National Bank Community Room.
Claremore’s BBBSOK will participate in Rogers State University basketball games on January, 22nd. The women’s team will play at 6 pm. Then RSU will call down the Bigs and Littles to make basketball presentations to the Littles from 7:45-8 pm (right before the men’s game starts). The men’s team will then play at 8 pm. Area board members may also be present at the game to show their support of BBBS and RSU!
The Norman office will be setting up a booth at all of the Blazers home games during the month of January to promote National Mentoring Month. BBBSOK-Norman will also participate in a Big Brothers Big Sisters night at the Blazers hockey game on Saturday, January 17th.
