The Big Brothers Big Sisters national office has named BBBSOK a finalist to receive Leadership Awards for Agency of the Year and Board of the Year based on performance in 2008. This put BBBSOK among the top three large agencies in the country in both categories. A formal announcement of the official Leadership Award winners will be made during the national conference in Miami on June 16. Fellow contenders for Agency of the Year include BBBS of Southeastern Pennsylvania and BBBS of Utah-two major metropolitan areas. Fellow contenders for Board of the Year include BBBS of Southeastern Pennsylvania and BBBS of Tennessee (Nashville).
CEO Sharla Hall believes that this speaks volumes about the staff and board members working for BBBSOK throughout the state to change children's lives for the better through mentoring.
In April, the agency received the Gold Standard Award. Out of 400 plus BBBS agencies, only 17 were chosen by the national office to receive this prestigious award. In the past year BBBSOK has served over 2,500 children, increased in growth by 12% in the past year, and exceeded the national average in lasting matches.
A strong and effective governing body directly affects the health of the organization and BBBSOK has also been nominated for Board of the Year. The State Board of Directors and area board members bring a diversity of knowledge and practical experience that is vital to the organization. Together they work to gather support for the agency and offer sound advice that may impact organizational direction and expansion. It is also the desire of board members to see BBBSOK continue to maintain and exceed national standards of quality in fulfilling its mission to help children to reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships.
