Spring Scholarships for Former Littles

10/10/2008

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma (BBBSOK) is encouraging all former Littles to apply to receive the Mark H. Iola Scholarship in the Spring of 2009. The fast-approaching deadline is November 15, 2008. This scholarship has a value of $1000 to be used toward any educational pursuit after high school. The scholarship committee also has the ability to increase scholarships based on academic achievement.

Mark H. Iola created the scholarship program in 2003. His vision was to provide a way to help former Littles to realize their dreams. Offering scholarships to former Littles would motivate them to continue their education after high school. Iola scholarships may be used for any educational purposes at colleges, universities, vocational training schools, trade schools and graduate programs. Iola was the founder of Big Brothers & Sisters of Green Country, and today still remains a major supporter of the now-statewide organization (Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma).

Iola Scholarship recipients of Fall 2008 all came from different high schools and backgrounds and had different career goals. However, they had one thing in common. They needed and appreciated the extra financial help as they transitioned into life after high school. Iola funds can be used for books, tools, and any other expense that is directly related to their course of study and training. They chose to go to colleges that include Oral Roberts University, Rogers State University, Tulsa Community College, Rose State College, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Arkansas.

The upcoming November 15 deadline will allow recipients to receive funds to be used in the Spring and Summer. Applicants are selected based on financial need, volunteer work, community involvement and academic achievement. While the match does not have to be currently active, an applicant must have been a Little for at least one year. The scholarship committee also makes it easy for recent recipients to continue to renew their awards. Documentation of enrollment for each semester must be submitted to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma Home Office in Tulsa before the granted scholarship will be disbursed. Once there is evidence of completion of the first semester and receipts for funds spent are submitted, additional funds are approved.
