Taste of Tulsa

02/08/2008

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma's 24th annual Taste of Tulsa raised more than $220,000 on Saturday, February 9 from sponsorships, ticket sales, silent and live auctions. More than 40 of Tulsa’s finest restaurants brought their menu favorites for 750 guests. Guests danced to music provided by the Mid Life Crisis Band.

Although Big Brothers Big Sisters serves 1100 children in our community, there are still almost 250 children on the waiting list – each waiting for a mentor that can make all the difference in their lives, providing hope and promoting their dreams for the future.  The first year of a match between a mentor and a child costs the agency $1000. Every dollar raised by the Taste of Tulsa directly benefits both current and future matches, the waiting children, and our community.

KTUL, Channel 8, anchors Mark Bradshaw and Cindy Morrison were emcees for the evening.  Mark Bradshaw also received the Matt Burtelow Award, recognizing his passion and commitment for the mentoring of children.

Auctioneer, Jay Litchfield, took bidding to new heights and sold a 1962 Chevy Nova convertible, a beautiful golden retriever puppy, a private jet trip for four to the NASCAR Allstate Brickyard 400, a package for the Celine Dion concert among many other items raising more than $ 100,000. A favorite live auction item each year is the opportunity for guests to “Adopt a Match” sponsoring a waiting child for one year.

Taste of Tulsa chairman, Ray Baumgarten said, “This event allows us to tell the Big Brother Big Sister story, welcome new supporters, and serve even more children in the Tulsa area.  Everyone looks forward to this event because it guarantees a good time for a great cause!”

Sponsors of the Taste of Tulsa included McElroy Manufacturing, SemGroup, Arby’s/US Beef, Arvest Bank, Bank of Oklahoma, Builders Steel Company, CD Richard Ellis/Oklahoma, EDS, Spirit AeroSystems, TD Williamson, Unit Corporation, Carlson Company, Cox Business Services, Explorer Pipeline, Pattison Precision Products, Statewide General Agency, The Gelvin Foundation, Tulsa National Bank and The Williams Companies.
